The end of a relationship is an ideal time for new beginnings, and what better way to start than with your wardrobe? Here are our fab post-breakup closet-cleanout tips:
Clothes that Hold Meaning: PITCH ‘EM
Maybe it was the dress you wore on your first date, or the sweater he gave you for Christmas two years ago. There’s no time like the present to get rid of those sentimental attachments — particularly if they were in style several years ago but not so much now.
Jewelry Items: KEEP ‘EM (maybe)
If you honestly love the jewelry your ex gave you (a.k.a. diamond studs that you wear every day), keep it. But if the nice baubles he gifted you have been sitting in a drawer for more than a few months, it might be time to sell them. Or, if it’s a piece as special as an engagement ring, think about selling the diamond and turning the setting into a showcase for a birthstone gem — or sell the whole she-bang and put it into your 401(k) for security you can count on.
Clothes You Haven’t Worn in a Year: PITCH ‘EM
True, some trends do come back in, but if you haven’t worn a piece in four seasons, chances are you never will again. Why not make room for the stuff you love by donating the stuff you don’t? Trust us, getting dressed in the morning will be so much easier if you don’t have to wade through stuff you feel lukewarm about.
Inexpensive “Sometimes” Shoes: PITCH ‘EM
So you bought a cheap pair of pumps for a job interview, or a pair of platforms for a Halloween costume? Time to toss ‘em. Now’s the time to fill your shoe rack with hot heels or cute ballet flats that’ll make you (and your mood) feel light as air.
