Start practicing your bunny dips: The Playboy Club premieres tonight at 10 p.m. EST on NBC. We can’t wait to check out the costumes and thank our lucky stars we don’t have to wear a tight corset to work. But will it be worth watching past the first episode?
The reviews haven’t exactly been glowing. Here’s what the L.A. Times‘s TV critic said:
For all its “Mad Men” pretensions (which extend so far as casting Naturi Naughton, who played Lane’s bunny paramour in Season 4) and judge-not retro naughtiness, creator Chad Hodge doesn’t have the courage of his convictions. “The Playboy Club” is nothing but a tarted-up mob drama; the bunnies may be used as the marketing and milieu but the main narrative is about the men, and no one seems aware of the irony.
Yikes. Which was our fear as well. Mad Men‘s excellent writing and production provided cultural context and a chance for viewers to connect emotionally with extremely well-developed characters. But it sounds like this show is just a sexy soundstage for drab melodrama. We hope to be proved wrong tonight!
