Perhaps Carrie Bradshaw didn’t get her happy ending after all. Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell, 53, filed for divorce on Friday from her ballet dancer husband of nine years. (Now the Mikhail Baryshnikov–as–The Russian casting decision makes a little more sense.)
Dancer Charles Askegard, then a principal dancer for the New York City Ballet and 10 years Bushnell’s junior, and she were married on July 4, 2002. Via a representative, Bushnell said this:
“We had some wonderful times in our nine-year marriage, and I still care about Charles as a person. I respect his desire to pursue his own happiness and hope that we will continue to be friends in the future.”
A source told the New York Post that the split was in the works for a while:
“This has been coming for a long time. They have been living increasingly separate lives. Candace has been spending more and more time in the country at her house in Connecticut, while Charles has been in the city working. He has been going through a huge career transition.”
We wish her the best — and hope she’s sleeping soundly on the big pile of money she’s earned herself. No Mr. Big required.
