The Museum of Broken Relationships: Breakups as Art

Perhaps your Valentine’s Day was less than stellar, in which case you’ll appreciate this collection of art: The Museum of Broken Relationships, in Croatia, houses mementos from breakups, including (but not limited to) a cracked garden gnome tossed during a fight and a wedding dress from a bad marriage.

The Associated Press reports:

“The objects that are here represent all the stages of a breakup … and how people go through love,” said Drazen Grubisic, a designer and artist who co-founded the museum in 2010… ”We might say it’s a love museum, just upside down,” he said.

The donors of the items are anonymous, but each object is accompanied by the dates and geographic locations of the relationship and text that explains it.

Some are bitter. The garden gnome flew over a car driven by a husband who turned “arrogant and heartless.” It bounced on the asphalt, shattering its face.

“It was a long loop, drawing an arc of time … that defined the end of love,” the note from Slovenia said.

An ax from Berlin was used by a woman to smash every piece of furniture her girlfriend had left behind.

“The more the room filled with chopped furniture, (the more) I felt better.”

So, if you’re currently enmeshed in Facebook-stalking your ex and his new flame, just think: Your laptop could technically be an objet d’art. And you’re also not alone.

Want to unload your relationship baggage too? Submit an object to the museum for consideration by filling out the form here.
