Mindy Kaling Admits Guys Like Jim Halpert Don’t Exist

Raise your hand if you’re a woman or a gay man and you ever said to yourself while watching The Office, “Why can’t I find a guy like Jim Halpert?” Answer: His character is a LIE. Even The Office writer Mindy Kaling admits that men like him just aren’t out there.

From writer Jada Yuan’s New York Magazine Vulture story about Kaling:

Kaling thinks she may have developed heightened expectations in her own romantic life from having spent eight years writing for The Office character of Jim Halpert — “as unrealistic and desirable a guy as there is out there” — and then being confronted with the crushing reality of the actual dating pool. “You can’t help but in my real life think, ‘Oh, maybe there’s somebody like that.’ And when you meet someone who has maybe three quarters of [Jim’s] qualities, they also have some terrible qualities, like they can’t hold down a job, or they haven’t spoken to their parents for fifteen years, or they don’t shower.”

On a more positive note, we think that even though guys exactly like Jim don’t exist in real life, you can find the right (perhaps less perfect) “Jim” (or Jim’s female equivalent) for you if you stay patient and don’t settle. Hang in there, ladies and gents! And if you have found your Jim, do tell how you did it…

Kaling’s new show, The Mindy Project, premiered Tuesday on FOX.
