Ah, what could have been! Skeptics have been saying for years that in the 1997 film Titanic, the character Jack, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, could have hopped up on the flat piece of ship that carried Rose (Kate Winslet), thus saving her life. The Discovery Channel’s Mythbusters got on the case (and literally on the plank) and proved the naysayers right: Technically, they both could have lived.
Co-hosts Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage found that if Rose had stuck her life vest underneath the board, Jack could have joined her, thus sealing their romance for a lifetime (or for a while longer, anyway). Watch how they figured it, below:
When the guys break the news to director (and really good sport) James Cameron himself (!), he smacks down the criticism with this gem (Slate reports):
Cameron defers graciously to their conclusion, merely insisting that the script called for Jack to die, so maybe he and his production crew should have designed the plank to be a little smaller.
Fair enough. We admit: Our inner teenage girl is still weeping at the memory of Leonardo sinking to his watery grave. At least Rose got a steamy in-car sex session to remember him by.
