Study: 40% of People Find Music Sexier Than Touching

Good music is great, sure, but is it better than sex? A new study sponsored by Spotify found that more than 40 percent of the 2,000 U.K. residents surveyed think listening to music is more arousing than being touched.

Daniel Müllensiefen, PhD, co-director and senior lecturer on the Music, Mind and Brain course at Goldsmiths, University of London, conducted the study — participants were between 18 and 91 years old. Other findings:

1. Ryan Gosling was right in Crazy Stupid Love.

“Songs from the popular ’80s film Dirty Dancing were voted the most arousing music to play during sex.” Hmmm. We’d have thought that most guys would file the Dirty Dancing soundtrack under “boner killer,” but what do we know?

2. The classics are classic for a reason.

“The top track voted to ‘get us in the mood’ for sex was Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing and his Let’s Get it On took second place.” We agree! Check out a vintage Sexcerpts post, Weekend Sex Challenge: Have Sex to Music, to listen to some Marvin.

3. Some people really love their music.

“1 in 3 respondents were able to pick a music track they considered ‘better than sex.’” What tracks took the top spots? Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” was first, followed by  ”Sex on Fire” by the Kings of Leon (a favorite of Ana and Christian’s in Fifty Shades of Grey) and then “Angels” by Robbie Williams. Huh? Well, Robbie Williams is pretty sexy, if we’re judging partially on looks. However, Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell came in next, so…

4. If sex is on the horizon, people will lie about music to get some.

“The majority of those surveyed confessed to bending or altering their own personal music tastes to win over a date — those most likely to do this are those with more out there/strong personal music tastes such as punk or metal fans. Additionally, men are much more likely than women to change their tastes to seduce a prospective partner.”

Hey, if he can endure listening to our extensive Tori Amos collection on repeat, perhaps he’s earned that roll in the hay.
