Will Facebook Graph Search Replace Online Dating?

It’s a fair question: How will Facebook’s newly introduced “Graph Search,” a service that lets you search for people and businesses in your network, change dating forever? Will it essentially replace services like Match.com and OK Cupid?

Mashable reports on the new feature, presented this past week at a press event:

Facebook reps demonstrated several uses for the product, ranging from recruiting to searching for restaurant recommendations. Then, at one point, a Facebook employee stood on stage and searched for “friends of my friends who are single and living in San Francisco.”

With that simple line, Facebook asserted itself as a potentially big player in the future of online dating.

We’re not so sure that Graph Search is going to be the big game-changer in dating that everyone says it is. It’s still kind of creepy to receive a solicitous Facebook message from someone you don’t know (even if you do share mutual friends), especially if you’re technically single but not really looking for a date. With dedicated online dating sites, at least you know everyone’s there for the same reason.

Still, it is nice to have yet another convenient option if you’re looking to score some new friends (or lovers).
