Are you into Guy-on-Guy?

October 20th, 2008 by Annabelle

On the business end of things, it seems that gay porn sites get a ton of traffic from women. Is gay porn something that turns you on?

In an article in Metro, a UK paper, it is suggested that the Jake/Heath pairing in Brokeback Mountain may have been an influence. However, there is a much longer tradition. In Japan, for example, “boy-love comics” are quite popular among women.

Is two better than one? Are you about to ask your man for a threesome…and have it all your way? Why not try out some bisexual erotica from Petra Joy (a female porn director) to begin your explorations?

Sex on the High Seas

July 10th, 2008 by Annabelle

If you only watch one adult DVD in your years, watch Pirates. This swashbuckling extravaganza is the hottest piece of digital filmmaking to hit the shelves. It’s been a best-seller in the AVN charts since it came out in 2005 and has sold over 40,000 copies (says Adam&Eve). As a woman, I love the pirate fantasy-especially when it leaves Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom behind for some real action- the story, the sets and costumes. If you can’t do XXX, there’s a version out without the hardcore sex. The only thing that could be better is a Pirates 2: Stagnetti’s Revenge with Belladonna…oh wait. That’s coming out soon!

Here’s what the adult video pros at AVN had to say about Pirates. (Review by Jared Rutter)

Pirates is as much fun as an adult movie has any right to be - a bubbly blend of action-adventure, comedy, special effects and sex, plus the awesome eye-candy of the combined contract girls of Digital Playground and Adam & Eve. With maritime locations and sets that include a real pirate ship, plus some superb CGI work, it must be the most lavish skinflick ever made.

Its homage to pirate potboilers is heavily laced with ironic humor (think Pirates of the Caribbean). The hero, Capt. Edward Reynolds (Evan Stone), is a spectacularly inept pirate hunter, who, with his smart and sexy sidekick Jules (Jesse Jane), takes on the dreaded scourge of the seas, Capt. Victor Stagnetti (Tommy Gunn) and his supremely evil consort Serena (Janine).

Director Joone, known mostly for plotless erotic-eyeful fluff like the Island Fever series, shows a sure hand with story material, pacing the action well and handling a large cast with many small non-sex roles. Credited with photography and art direction as well as original story, he is definitely this picture’s auteur.

High Definition videography, even on a non-HD player, looks postcard-perfect, and a soaring John Williams-esque score adds to the epic sweep. The climactic battle with the skeletons of the undead adds chills and thrills.

Acting honors go mostly to the men. Stone manages to swashbuckle while getting laughs - a real star turn. Gunn, with his glass eye and raspy growl, is a downright scary villain.

But the really stunning performance comes from Janine, who dominates the screen from her first spectral appearance to her ultimate redemption. Completely inhabiting her juicy role, she has the larger than life presence of a Hollywood icon. It’s the capstone of her career.

Most memorable of the 12 sex scenes is Janine’s with Jesse Jane, coming late in the picture but well worth the wait. Jane also sparkles in scenes with Carmen Luvana and Steven St. Croix.

As good as the sex is, it’s only one element in this total entertainment package.

Sex Tapes: Played out or Put it on?

July 7th, 2008 by Annabelle

TMZ and AVN (this link takes you to an exclusive) have been reporting on this story that goes like this: Verne “Mini Me” Troyer’s ex-girlfriend released a sex tape of him and her going at it. One of the things that really gets Verne’s goat about this unwanted release of a night of pleasure is that he feels his character may be defamed. The question is does a sex tape hurt a person’s career anymore? And does anyone care? One Night in Paris? Kim Kardashian? Pam and Tommy? JLo? Who hasn’t covered this territory?
(Also note that Eliot Spitzer’s call girl will be available on DVD from Mr. Girls Gone Wild. Crickets? Or electric interest?)

How to Buy or Rent Porn

April 10th, 2008 by Annabelle

Have you ever walked into an adult video store? Ack, I barely had until recently when I got a new freelance gig reviewing the stuff. Only once before, in high school, had I visited a video store with a naughty back room with my boyfriend. (His idea.) The place was way out of our town in a semi-industrial area and everything about the experience felt un-femme-friendly. I browsed the new Hollywood releases, and he retrieved… something. We watched it together, a very stimulating experience, but the video itself was not my cup of tea, really. The thrill came from the clandestine, taboo feeling. Some previews piqued my interest, but how would I go about finding a video for myself?

OK, I was just 18 at the time, young and impressionable, but I wonder if my first porno experience had been girl-friendly, would I have sought it out myself at another point?

Now I’ve become sort of an expert on the stuff and this is how a lady, a dirty girl, any female can get her video jollies. When you’ve found what you like, here’s how to watch it.

1. Visit a store with women in mind. Babeland, Good Vibrations, Smitten Kitten (MN), Pleasures of the Heart (CA), for example, are store for females, totally fun to visit and they have a very knowledgeable staff who can help you with any question you can drag out of your pleasure chest (Oo, the Pleasure Chest is another good retailer).

2. Finding a video. I tell you, all box covers seem to look the same, especially when you look at them for a while. How do you find the good stuff in a sea of hard, hardcore? Here are a few tips on how to avoid the roughest of the rough and the plain boring:

-Girlfriends Films makes all-girl movies for women. Very sensual.

- Zentropa makes arty films by women for women. Scandinavian quality stuff. Check out English Language All About Anna.

-Certain performers don’t really seem to love what they are doing. Sasha Grey, Bree Olson and Katsumi (now Katsuni) love what they do, though they do get rough. Find titles with them.

-Scour the classics. Porn back in the day was way more sensual and erotic than what is made today. I totally recommend going retro. Vanessa Del Rio is a good performer to catch and movies like Deep Throat, Caligula (mainstream movie with real sex), The Opening of Misty Beethoven and Devil in Miss Jones are particularly good.

- Go new. If you like a retro or arty vibe, check out the releases from Vivid Alt. It’s new stuff from the art school grads - fun and with flair. Also, fine art photographer Carlos Batts’ movies Voluptuous Life and Young Hollywood give you a whole lot more than sex. The first is a documentary exploring sexuality and body image, the second is an erotic take on his young Hollywood fine art photo book.

3. Go to the source. AVN.com is the industry source for adult videos. Peruse their reviews and inform yourself… I’d stick to editor’s choices. They’re the best.

“It’s a Danish film shot entirely in English and features both adult and mainstream stars performing sex on camera for the first time. And it’s all performed within the context of a very female-empowering story.” (PR person Daniel Metcalf told AVN.com)

Plot: “Anna is a modern, independent single girl, focused on her job and wary of getting caught in romantic relationships. Her life is all about fun. Strangers without strings. No commitment, no casualties. She has just found a new apartment, and is tempted to let her latest boyfriend, Frank, move in with her. Instead, she finds a tenant: The flamboyant, fun-loving Camilla, who shares Anna’s views on love and commitment. But then an old boyfriend happens to knock on her door: Johan, the very man who five years previously broke Anna’s heart. Anna is tempted. It’s not good. More than ever, she needs to get back on the merry-go-round and move on. Fortunately, she receives an offer to design costumes for a theatre in Paris. As far away from romantic temptation as possible — right?” Written by Nicolas Barbano
