Josefin versus Sebastian

Paging through the newspaper over coffee, post-long night out on the town in a city I almost know in Sweden, I came across this article on flirting in bars. Thinking the Swedes are rather reticent when it comes to … everything, here’s what two total cuties think about flirting. (Goteborgs Posten May 6, 2008)

Josefin Palmdahl

Do you flirt?

Yes. It’s exciting. And it increases my self-esteem.

Do you usually make a move?

Yes, if I’m drunk. But usually I wait until someone makes a move.

How do you want to be hit on?

He’s not allowed to touch, then he’ll get a smack. And buying me drinks doesn’t work either; I can pay for those myself.

Is it possible to meet a future partner at a pub?

No, it’s just for fun. If I really want to meet someone, I’ll meet them through a friend or something.

Sebastian Ericson

Do you like to flirt?

Nej, it’s mostly tiresome. It usually feels forced and like you have to think of something clever to say.

Do you feel like there’s a big pick up scene at pubs?

Totally. It feels loaded sometimes - like you have to be wanting something more if you talk to someone. Then it’s easier just to hang out with people you know.

What do you think about being hit on?

It’s fun if it’s someone who I find interesting. If not, I try to sneak away, saying I have to get a beer, go to the toilett or something like that.

Do girls flirt with guys in different ways?

My understanding is that guys are more physical and direct in their language. Girls more often hint and cast glances and so on.
